MIRROR'S CORNER

HOLE AND CORNER

I am a shy boy, brown-skinned,
Dark haired and beautiful,
Scribbling unsaid poetry
On white paper.

You will find my thoughts here!
I am melancholy, sad eyes,
Grave and gloomy,
Like the slow hymns of a Christian sonata,
Holding me static on the pews
That filled my church –
Prison!

Imprisoned like Odysseus in Ogygia,
While my Calypso was the unattractive
Burden of solitude,
That ensorcelled me with her endless
Boasts of being peaceful and quiet.

I am the creator of that shadow
Silhouetted on the wall
Of the other side of my bedroom,
Weaving words like clothes,
Making metaphors into fabrics,
From Aso-Oke, regal and graceful
To English suits and ties.
You will find me everywhere!

From coasts to coasts,
Stitching fragments of the figments
Of my imagination,
Bringing them into life.

That sound of the heart pulsating,
Beating its existence;
A ‘dhak-dhak’ followed by a ‘lub-dub’
Words flowing like blood,
Flowing like freshly tapped palm wine,
Dripping across the bark of a brown Calabash.
Call it POETAILORY!

I am a shy boy, brown-skinned,
Dark haired and beautiful,
Backbencher and bottom of the class,
Scribbling unsolicited poetry
While the teacher is teaching.
My education lives here!

I am caution thrown into the wind,
Pouring my feelings into words,
Words oscillating between prose
And Poetry,
Hidden meanings meant for my lover’s eyes.
