THE ROLES OF WRITERS IN SOCIETY

Writing is as old as life itself.
As human societies emerged, the development of writing was driven by pragmatic exigencies such as exchanging information, maintaining financial accounts, codifying law and recording history.

Writing has been a tool for man to express his thought, ideas, point of view, etc. Man knows that his voice cannot reach some places but vehemently want to tell people his view(s). Thus, he makes up his mind and employs both a pen and papers to transmit his view, idea and thought across the globe.

Having said the above, the question ‘ Who is a real writer?’ has been ringing in people’s minds. Some even land their conclusion that everybody that can read and write is a writer. Well, I think that conclusion is incomplete by looking at a plausible definition. A writer is a person who uses written words in various styles and techniques to communicate ideas, thought, point of view, etc. Even scholars postulate that a real writer produces various forms of literary art and creative writing such as novels, short stories, poetry, plays, screenplays, and essay as well as various utilitarian forms such as reports and news articles.

Judging from the above remarks one can conclude that anybody that can demonstrate any of the aforementioned literary skills can be referred to a real writer.

What are the roles of writers in society?
Some people have hideous notion that writers have no significant roles to play at all. What a convenient conclusion!

But to answer the question doesn’t cause a drop of sweat. Of course, writers have very important roles to play in society. Prof. Chinua Achebe once said “If the society is ill, it’s the responsibility of writers to tell” Apart from that, writers, by nature, are teachers. They teach moral, intellectual, idealistic or cynical lesson. They, precisely African writers, correct the past and give hope. They are activists: they fight for human right. They contribute significantly to the culture. They hone people’s brain and encourage people to be happy for who they are. Writers are the fuel of every society, without them no progress in societies.
